1–2: Registration and proof
Ask first: 'Do you register every device by serial number at pickup?' If the answer isn't an immediate yes, stop there. Without per-device registration there is no chain of custody, and no way to prove later what happened to which drive.
Then: 'What documents do I receive afterwards?' The right answer has three parts: an intake list, a certificate of destruction per data carrier, and a final report showing each device's end destination. One vague 'confirmation email' for the whole batch is a red flag.
3–4: Method and verification
Third: 'How exactly do you destroy data?' You want to hear about certified erasure software that overwrites the full drive, aligned with current sanitisation standards like IEEE's, plus physical destruction for drives that fail verification or carry high-risk data. 'We format everything' means your data survives.
Fourth: 'Is the erasure verified?' Erasure without verification is a hope, not a process. Professionals verify each carrier after wiping and can show recovery checks; that verification is what your destruction certificate is actually worth.
5–6: Transport and speed
Fifth: 'Who transports the equipment, and how?' The answer should be: their own team, in sealed containers, with documented handover, not a subcontracted courier. The chain of custody starts at your door, not at their warehouse.
Sixth: 'How fast can you collect?' Disposal projects have a habit of surfacing at the worst moment, an office move next week, an audit next month.
